Ocean Odyssey

The amazing life journey of an 80-year-old, 45-ton bull whale and family at the bottom of the Atlantic and Pacific Cceans...
Prepare to dive deep into the oceans as we take you on a fantastic, unforgettable ride into the depths.

First up is this production by the Walking With… team, in which the latest CGI graphics and live action footage are used to explore one of the last great unexplored landscapes on Earth through the eyes of the world’s largest predator, the sperm whale.

Following the life journey of an 80-year-old, 45-ton bull whale, we take in the spectacular sights at the bottom of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as he and his family fend off an attack by a pod of orca whales and does battle with a colossal squid.

As we dive over two kilometres below the surface the landscape of the deep comes vividly to life, with the impossibly deep canyons, underwater volcanoes and the highest and longest mountain ranges on Earth, home to black dragonfish that cast an eerie red glow and jellyfish shaped like giant footballs.

Through our rollercoaster journey, we discover how over 80 years the seas have changed beyond recognition, a warning to us all about the sensitive nature of the sea.

When is it on? * Ocean Odyssey
Two-part documentary looking at life in our oceans. This edition relates the life story of an 80-year-old, 45-tonne bull sperm whale found stranded on a beach in New Zealand.
On at 9.00pm on Monday 12th February on UKTV Documentary

I've seen several times a TV show called "Planet Earth" It's a BBC thing, and it's quite good. It's mostly about the ocean, from what I've seen. Yesterday there was a very interesting episode that had some deep sea creatures. They looked weird, yet sorta beautiful. It's a really fascinating program.

Here's the link to the site on it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/planetearth/

Extending a sea ethic would mean recognizing the ocean’s importance to the continued existence of life on our planet and to human futures. From this recognition would flow an appropriate sense of moral imperative, commitment, and urgency—urgency toward ending overfishing and wasteful bycatch and aggressively rebuilding depleted ocean wildlife populations, stabilizing human effects on world climate, slowing habitat destruction, stemming global transport and accidental introduction of "alien" species, curbing the flow of contaminants and trash, developing sustainable seafood farming, cultivating an informed approach to the seafood marketplace, and implementing networks of protected areas in the sea. - Dr. Carl Safina
