Any Interest in Podcasting a Thesis Defense?

New postby kwbyron » March 16, 2010 - 12:42 pm

So, this site was really helpful in me finding my way into the field of Marine biology, schools, help with some projects, ext. I thought I now have a chance to give back a little and thought I would offer to pod cast my defense coming up. I'll say, I haven't run the idea by my advisor, or not sure if/how to do it... but it would be good for new students to see what it is we do as grad students, and maybe I could answer questions later on or something. I'm hoping to defend towards the end of April, although I'm still collecting data : ) (Not normally doable, but I'm not TA'ing or taking classes this semester)

Anyways, working title is :
Lost in Olfaction: Abiotic factors influence tracking behavior in Stromanita haemastoma

Let me know if ya'll are interested.

Hey Kevin,
I think it would be very interesting to podcast your thesis defense... I actually think it would be a great project to start - among other things, if other people joined in and added their defenses to the feed, we could build up a "recent research" database type thing that people could watch to learn more about how graduate research works. Oh yeah, and I'd definitely watch it. :)
Good luck finishing!

NOSB: A great way for high schoolers to learn about the oceans.

A whale killed a dolphin but he was acquitted because he didn't do it on porpoise.

That could be interesting. I was very thankful we didn't have an oral exam of any form, we did for the BSc, I was out of my mind with anxiety for weeks. I am very much not a presenter, more of a writer... Giving talks and presentations is still traumatising to me although the prospect no longer reduces me to hysterics like it used to....
But I digress.... ongoing research stuff could be interesting.

We're not unique, just at one end of the spectrum.

We have an oral exam after the defense... I'm thinking I'll schedule mine at 6am, tell them I'll provide coffee, but not until we're done! mwah-haha.

Jellyfish123, the title is for my thesis, although it'll be similar for my defense. A good title is succinct, but also gives a good indication of what the project was and hints at the results. The goal is to entice people to read your abstract, which leads to reading the article, citing your paper, raising your impact factor, which leads to better jobs/grants/ext.

Let me know if the site wants to do it (moderators) and I'll start making the arrangements. I'm not sure about other schools, but our defenses last about 45 minutes.
